U.S. Rep. Darin LaHood (R-Ill.) says he hears the frustration from voters who have voiced their support for apparent Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and says he’ll support the candidate.
“They’re frustrated with Washington not doing anything,” said the Peoria Republican to WJBC’s Scott Laughlin. “They’re frustrated with the gridlock, they’re frustrated with economy, and so he is our nominee and I’m going to support the nominee.”
LaHood says he is confident that Trump will surround himself with bright people just as he has done in business.
“If you surround yourself with bright, smart people, you delegate, you listen to them, you can be tremendously successful,” said LaHood. “I think Donald Trump hasn’t gotten to where he’s at in business without surrounding himself with bright, smart people and listening to them.”
LaHood hopes the candidate will now more completely develop his positions.
“There’s going to be a critical period between now and the Republican convention in July to kind of lay out where he stands on issues and to be serious and lay out policy positions,” said LaHood. “That’s going to be very, very important on how he pivots and becomes much more presidential.”
LaHood admits he doesn’t agree with Trump on some issues but he still supports the party’s nominee.
