PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — Two people appear to have been arrested in connection with a death investigation that began Monday, according to online jail records.
Portia Stokes, 26, and Michael Jansen, 29, were both booked into the Peoria County Jail on Tuesday morning on the single charge of first-degree murder.
The report number that was assigned to their arrest is the same one that was assigned to a homicide investigation announced later that by the Peoria Police Department.
It’s not clear how either are involved nor is it clear what actually happened.
Police Chief Brad Dixon said officers were called to the 500 block of East Seneca Place to check the welfare of a person inside.
When they arrived, officers found a man inside who was dead. While the cause of death has not yet been determined, it was deemed to be “suspicious,” and as such, a criminal investigation was launched, he said.
The matter is also being investigated by the Peoria County Coroner’s Office, he said. An autopsy was set for later this week.
If this is deemed to be a homicide, it would be the city’s sixth homicide of the year.
