MCLEAN, Ill. (WMBD) — After being adopted, Moose and Mya, the bonded pair of dogs, have been returned to Ruby’s Rescue, yet again looking for their forever home.
Moose and Mya arrived at Ruby’s Rescue and Retreat in bad shape in the summer of 2024. Both of them had heartworm, bugs, and were starved. Jean Ann Hert and Tim Christensen own the rescue and took the pair in to get them fixed up.

“They were in terrible shape. They were taken from a neglect case. Both were heartworm positive. They were both emaciated. Moose weighed 60 pounds. Maya here weighed 30 pounds. She had to have a blood transfusion to stay alive,” said Hert.
In April of 2026, the pair was adopted by a couple who wanted to give them a loving home, even though it was going to be a big adjustment for the couple.
“I know that that was an adjustment for them, but they decided to persevere. They’re going to get through it. They’re going to give these dogs a great home,” Hert said. “Then, unfortunately, they had grandkids come and visit.”
“These dogs are just not good with kids, which we had told them. I think they were hoping that they would do better, and they just don’t.”

Not long after the pair was returned to the rescue, they continued their search for a loving home. Hert hopes that one day the pair will find the perfect home to live the rest of their lives.
“They’re just great, great dogs. They just have to have the right home. A farm home where they could run around the farm all day, play, and come in and sleep at night. They would be happy. They would be happy,” Hert said.
Anyone looking to adopt Moose and Mya or any other dogs at the rescue can reach out to the rescue by going to their website and filling out an application.
