NORMAL, Ill. (WMBD) — The Illinois State University Board of Trustees approved the design and construction of the National Pan-Hellenic Council Plaza Friday morning.
The plaza will feature nine pillars and a donor wall recognizing historically black fraternities and sororities and their impact on the university.
“The Divine Nine, historically black fraternities and sororities, have been an integral part of Illinois State University for more than 50 years. To recognize their legacy, contributions, and lasting impact, the university proposes the construction of a National Panhellenic Council Plaza,” said Aondover Tarhule, president of the university.
The plaza will be a permanent addition to the campus and will cost no more than $1 million, funded by foundation dollars and bond revenue funds. Tarhule said this space will serve as a place of reflection of the university’s commitment to inclusion.
“This permanent campus landmark will provide a space for reflection and celebration while reinforcing the university’s commitment to inclusion, recognition and institutional history,” said Tarhule.
Construction of the plaza is expected to begin during the 2026 homecoming week.
