PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — A local organization is looking for 60 more “bigs” to make a difference in the lives of “littles.”
Hannah Daly, the community engagement director, and Katie Mitzelfelt, the development director of the Heart of Illinois Big Brothers Big Sisters organization, stopped by WMBD This Morning to explain how important big brothers and sisters are to littles.
“It increases their chances of going to school, it increases their chances of graduating high school, of going to college. They feel empowered through their relationship with their big,” explained Mitzelfelt.
“We have a wait list of over 100 kids waiting for a mentor,” added Daly.
The Heart of Illinois Big Brother Big Sister branch covers Peoria, Fulton, Knox and McLean counties.
“We work really hard because we’re truly devoted to the mission,” said Daly.
The next big event in that push for mentors is the 60 Bigs in 60 Days Happy Hour, scheduled from 4:30-6:30 p.m. July 30 at Analytical Brewing, 831 SW Adams St., in Peoria. The event is designed for attendees to learn more about becoming a mentor in a casual, no-pressure setting.
