NORMAL, Ill. (WMBD) — An area school board leader was called out on social media by members of the Republican Party after they deemed a post he made included “lies” about conservatives.
The McLean County Republican Party wrote in a Facebook post saying that Unit 5 School Board President Alex Williams “insulted a vast majority of his student body and their families” after sharing on social media, following the death of Charlie Kirk, a video that was captioned “what MAGA cult believes.”
A spokesperson for the McLean County Republican Party wrote in their post saying there was a misinterpretation of the party as a whole and its voters.
“As a public leader, he should not resort to such tactics. This post distorts, mischaracterizes, and lies about conservative Americans across this nation. Mr. Williams needs to publicly apologize to the families of Unit 5 and to conservative voters across this county.”
Williams made local history with his win in the 2023 consolidated elections as the first African-American man elected to Unit 5’s School Board.
He ran with three platform points: transparency, collaboration and representation.
“I really ran to represent the students. So, I am very proud to be a voice for those students and to advocate for an ongoing educational experience that this community has come to expect,” he said after he was elected.
A McLean County Democrats spokesperson released a statement to WMBD regarding this statement, saying, “The McLean County Democrats believe every American has the right to free speech under the First Amendment. That includes elected officials and everyday citizens alike. This is not, and should never be, a political issue.”
WMBD reached out to both Williams and Unit 5 and has not yet received a response.
