NORMAL – The Normal Town Council on Monday made formal an agreement with Heartland Community College to have emergency medical service students work with the Normal Fire Department.

City manager Mark Peterson said the town has for several years allowed these students to do clinical ride time with the department.

"They get hands-on experience. They're performing procedures in real life situations under the watchful eye of our trained paramedics, of course," he said.

The supervision is done by on-duty paramedics at no extra cost to the town. The training is required by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

"It's also good for our people as well," said Peterson. "It helps hone our own skills, as they have an opportunity to share their knowledge with these students."

Peterson said this hands-on training is a crucial piece of the future paramedic's education.

Parking changes

Also on Monday, the council approved an adjustment to its traffic code which prohibits parking on the same block for more than 24 hours.

The council voted to eliminate what's known as a "non-tolling" provision, which means even moving the car within the block doesn't restart your time.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
