McLean County Sheriff Jon Sandage hopes Narcan will reduce opioid overdoses in the county.

BLOOMINGTON – The McLean County Sheriff’s Department will begin to carry Narcan, a nasal spray that reverses the effects of opioids such as heroin.
McLean County Sheriff Jon Sandage explained the integration of Narcan into the lives of the deputies who will provide it to someone who is overdosing.
“Basically the police officers will carry Narcan, which reverses the opioid effect of heroin or other prescription meds. So in order to carry that in a car we had to have the training on it, come up with a policy for it, and then get a prescription written for it,” said Sandage.
Sandage explained how drug users are getting their opioid fix.
“It’s not just the heroin, it’s the prescription pill problem. I’d like to say that we’re making headway on it, but I don’t think we’ve seen the worst of it yet,” said Sandage.
Deputies began carrying Narcan in their squad cars on Monday.
