BLOOMINGTON – Eighteen Bloomington-Normal high school students, participants in the inaugural Youth Global Citizen Class of 2016, recently concluded their efforts to provide both financial and in-kind support to four non-profit organizations, including two in McLean County.
Class participants will present their donations to the beneficiaries in a ceremony on Saturday from 12 to 1 p.m. at iEXCELL, 2416 East Washington Street Suite F, Bloomington.
YGC, an eight-month youth leadership and service program, is sponsored by a local non-profit For A Better Tomorrow. YGC promotes the growth of self-awareness, a better understanding of social justice, the development of service and servant leadership and an orientation towards philanthropy and the support of community-enhancing organizations.
The Bloomington-Normal non-profits are Labyrinth Outreach Service to Women and the Promise Council. Labryinth plans to add a new security system while Promise Council plans to seek requests from the schools that it serves.
The international organizations include Aple Ghar and Sri Vidhya, non-profits in India to whom FBT has been providing support for the past three years.
“YGC celebrates its investment in youth, believing in young adults’ passion for justice and service as well as their potential to make a significant difference in local and global communities both now and for years to come,” said Mary Aplington, YGC Steering Committee Chair.
YGC is accepting applications for Class of 2017. More information is available at ForBetterTomorrow.org/YGC. Inquiries about the YGC event should be directed to Aplington at maplington@gmail.com.
