SPRINGFIELD – The ridesharing company Uber says it is looking to expand into Illinois' capital city of Springfield.
Uber spokeswoman Lauren Altmin tells The (Springfield) State Journal-Register that the company has spoken with the city of Springfield and looks “forward to exploring opportunities.''
Springfield city spokesman Nathan Mihelich says a proposed ordinance allowing ridesharing businesses to operate is expected to be on an upcoming city council agenda. Under a draft of the measure drivers would have to obtain permits, meet city requirements including background checks and pay a $500 annual permit fee.
Uber is one of a handful of companies operating in Illinois that connect passengers with drivers who use personal vehicles to give rides.
