BLOOMINGTON – One in three women across the planet will be assaulted every year, which is why women around the globe stood together in solidarity today for the One Billion Rising event.
The One Billion Rising campaign recognizes violence against women as a global issue and unites people of all races, cultures, classes and religions to fight for change. The YWCA hosted its own recognition of the event for the fifth time this year.
Children’s Home + Aid Family Support Services Supervisor Jeannie Higdon called the number of women assaulted each year “devastating.”
“But today we’re gonna be strong and we’re gonna celebrate our strength and coming together,” said Higdon. “I come for myself. I have two daughters. I come for my sisters, my mothers, my aunts, my families. I come for everybody in the community, to stand up for those who can’t stand up for themselves.”
Jamie Russell with Children’s Home + Aid said she’s been part of One Billion Rising since the beginning.
“It’s just a fun atmosphere to get together with other women,” said Russell. “Just getting together and coming for such an important cause.”
Higdon added it’s been exciting to see the event grow each year.
