WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin is blasting Republican leaders on the issue of Zika.
The Illinois Democrat is asking Congressional Republicans to follow up on President Barack Obama’s request for $1.9 billion in emergency funding to help fight Zika. Durbin said Zika discussions may center on Florida for the moment, but Illinois is not immune to Zika worries.
“Illinois has now had 47 cases of Zika, but with Chicago being a major transportation hub, hundreds of more pregnant women have sought care and advice from the providers and have undergone tests to make sure their babies are safe,” Durbin said.
Durbin said the Zika situation represents a new precedent.
“For the first time even, the first time in the history of our country the Centers for Disease Control is warning Americans that there are certain parts of the continental United States that are not safe to travel in,” Durbin declared.
Obama made the request for Zika funding seven months ago.
