OTTAWA, Ill. (WMBD) — An Ottawa man is dead after allegedly shooting at LaSalle County deputies Saturday afternoon, according to Illinois State Police.
Jacob Williamson, 49, of Ottawa was identified as the person who was allegedly shooting at the officers who then shot back, according to the state police.
At 12:43 p.m. on July 4, LaSalle County deputies saw a vehicle that was linked to Williamson, who allegedly had a warrant out for his arrest. The details of that warrant weren’t immediately known.
Deputies tried to stop the vehicle, but Williamson allegedly drove off, the state police said. The pursuit took deputies to his house, which is in the 2200 block of East 13th Road in Ottawa.
Investigators with the state police allege Williamson got out of the vehicle with a gun and shot at the deputies. The officers returned fire, hitting him. The deputies rendered aid but Williamson was pronounced dead at the scene. Neither deputy was injured.
State law mandates that the state police investigate any officer-involved shooting to avoid a potential conflict of interest.
Once their investigation is complete, the case will be turned over to the LaSalle County State’s Attorney’s Office which will make a legal determination of whether charges are merited.
