BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — Community members gathered Sunday in Downtown Bloomington for a “No Kings” rally organized by Bloomington-Normal 50501.
The event was held on the front lawn of the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts and featured speakers, music and signs. Organizers described the gathering as a peaceful demonstration focused on civic engagement and participation in the democratic process.
Bloomington-Normal 50501 organizer Lily Linden said the rally was intended to allow attendees to share their views and engage with issues they care about.
Linden said turnout at the group’s events has continued to grow in recent months.
“It really shows that our community is with us in supporting democracy, making sure that everyone in this town, in this state and in this country feels supported,” Linden said.
Organizers also encouraged participants to remain involved in their communities through voting, volunteering and supporting local organizations.
Linden said public demonstrations provide an opportunity for elected officials to better understand their constituents’ concerns.
“Our politicians can’t read our minds,” Linden said. “Being out here today with our signs, with our speeches, is a way for them to see what we care about and what we don’t want to see continue to happen.”
When asked what message she would share with those who disagree with the group’s views, Linden said she respects differing opinions and encouraged everyone to participate in the electoral process.
The rally concluded shortly after noon.
According to organizers, Bloomington-Normal 50501’s next event is scheduled for June 27 on the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts lawn.
