BLOOMINGTON – Bloomington’s liquor commission might soon see some changes.
Currently, Bloomington has a three-person liquor commission. The City Council will vote Monday on eliminating the city’s liquor commission as it is and allowing Mayor Tari Renner to appoint a deputy liquor commissioner.
City Attorney George Boyle explained Illinois law already makes each mayor the city liquor commissioner, but it’s up to the city to decide how he or she is assisted – if at all.
“There will still be public hearings for license applicants,” said Boyle. “The only thing this changes is whether that’s in front of the Liquor Commission or the liquor commissioner.”
Boyle said Renner would not be gaining anymore power than he already has. The change would take effect as soon as the ordinance is signed by the mayor, if the council approves it.
Also on Monday, aldermen will vote on banning the use of e-cigarettes from city buildings.
