BLOOMINGTON – Dial-up internet is a distant memory and now two companies will be offering Gigabit internet service to customers in the twin cities.
Metronet out of Indiana will begin offering the ultra high-speed internet later this fall. Now, Comcast cable will be offering the same speeds during a trial that is underway. Regional Vice President of Communications Jack Segal (see-gull) says this move by Comcast is not in reaction to the competition from Metronet.
“The technology that is powering this and allowing us to do this is called Docsis 3.1,” said Segal. “We actually tested Docsis 3.1 four year ago in Chicago so we’ve been planning this move for several years.”
Gigabit speed internet will allow you to download a high definition movie in 40 seconds. The service is priced at just under $140 a month and may require a new modem.
