CHICAGO – A new state law signed by Gov. Bruce Rauner requires insurance coverage for 3D mammograms.
The law applies to both private insurers and Medicaid. Rauner said that ensures all patients have access to a better breast cancer screening tool.
“To think that we can fund 40 percent more (screenings), that’s stunning,” Rauner said. “This is a very important day for the women of Illinois to improve women’s health.”
State Sen. John Mulroe, D-Chicago, said this will improve early detection of breast cancer and help alleviate anxiety.
“It reduces the amount of callbacks which saves money, saves cost to everybody,” Mulroe said. “It reduces the anxiety and the stress and the fears of a woman who is waiting until the date she goes back for diagnostic testing.”
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Illinois women. The Illinois Department of Public Health estimates more than 10,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.
