PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — Peoria Chiefs history was made at Dozer Park on Wednesday.
The Chiefs broke the franchise record for most home runs in a single season, set in 2002 with the help of future St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Famer Yadier Molina who had seven that year.
Two home runs early in the game on Wednesday put the Chiefs over the previous record of 122 in a season.
In the bottom of the third inning against the West Michigan Whitecaps, first baseman Jack Gurevitch hit his 13th home run of the season, tying the 24-year-old record.
Two innings later, shortstop Jalin Flores would hit his 11th of the season, giving the Chiefs 123 home runs on the season, beating the record.
An announcement was made over the public address system, prompting a roaring applause from the people in attendance
Gurevitch was drafted by the Cardinals in 2025 by the Cardinals in the third round with the 89th overall pick. He was assigned to the Chiefs on May 12.
Flores was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2025, taken in the 11th round, 330th overall. He joined the Chiefs starting on April 1.
The Chiefs are the Cardinal’s High A affiliate within the minor leagues.
