BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — The Bloomington Township held a special meeting Monday night to vote on adding three questions to the November ballot.
Over 200 voters showed up to the meeting held at the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts. The township members voted on three non-binding questions to add to the ballot. These questions will only serve as a recommendation to the city, state, and federal government.
At the meeting, a vote for the federal government to ban the transfer of weapons to any country that’s considered a dictatorship or a major violator of human rights passed 94 to 15 after many public comments.
A vote to appeal the added one percent grocery tax also passed 107 to four. The main question from the meeting was about a continued moratorium on large-scale data centers in Illinois.
The Bloomington City Council already passed a six-month moratorium at its council meeting on May 25. This vote is to recommend the extension of said moratorium. That vote also passed unanimously.
One Bloomington council member, Mollie Ward, representing the seventh ward of Bloomington, attended the meeting and encouraged voters there to continue to use their voice at other governmental meetings.
“If you really want to make a difference, if you really want this thing to be repealed, come to city council meetings, take your 3 minutes, and speak up,” Ward said. “Write your emails. Not a mass email. Write a personal email, give a phone call.”
“All of our phone numbers are on the City Council website. All of our email addresses are on the City Council website.”
All of the questions that passed tonight will appear on the ballot in November, once all the votes are verified by the Bloomington Township Council.
