ILLINOIS, Ill. (WTVO) — Illinois drivers are set to face increased costs at the gas pump beginning July 1, when the state’s gas tax will rise to nearly 50 cents per gallon. This upcoming increase is an automatic annual inflation adjustment that was incorporated into the 2019 Rebuild Illinois infrastructure program.
Currently, the Illinois Motor Fuel Tax is at $0.483 per gallon; on July 1, it will go up to $0.496.
The automatic adjustment means Illinois motorists will continue to pay among the nation’s highest gas taxes. Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed the Rebuild Illinois program into law, establishing the annual inflation-based tax increases.
In response, House Republicans have introduced a proposal to implement a six-month pause on the gas tax increase. This legislative effort is currently awaiting review within the Rules Committee.
Separately, President Trump recently proposed a temporary suspension of the 18-cent federal gas tax, a suggestion made amid the ongoing conflict in Iran. Congressional approval would be necessary for any federal gas tax suspension to take effect.
