BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — The city of Bloomington is moving forward with a project that upgrades dozens of traffic signals to support emergency response.
As emergency vehicles approach one of the 87 intersections that will be upgraded, the system will change the signal to keep them moving, reducing delays, said city spokesperson Katherine Murphy.
The same technology will be installed on Bloomington Fire Department vehicles at all six stations, so everything is connected and working together.
Murphy said the city already uses an earlier version of signal priority that relies on emitters tied to emergency lighting. This upgrade introduces GPS coordination, enabling more precise and consistent responses at intersections.
The project is supported by secured grant funding and will be completed in phases. Design and installation will be handled by city staff.
The city of Bloomington owns half of the intersections included, and the remaining locations will be coordinated in partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation.
Work is expected to begin this year, with installation moving forward in stages as equipment is deployed.
