NORMAL, Ill. (WMBD) — The town of Normal announced that it will be holding a special event to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Route 66 on Sunday.
A 1950s-themed roadside picnic will take place at One Normal Plaza from noon to 4 p.m. on June 7, according to Cathy Oloffson, a town of Normal spokesperson.
The picnic will feature live music, a roller skating rink, classic cars, yard games and Route 66-themed giveaways.
“We are thrilled to represent the 1950s decade along the historic route,” said Cultural Arts Director Beth Whisman. “We really leaned into the fun, kitsch nostalgia of the decade’s family road trips, music and activities.”
Free parking will be available at the marked lots off Pine and Lincoln Streets in addition to free street parking.
This is one of several events celebrating Route 66 around McLean County. The full list of events is available here.
