NORMAL, Ill. (WMBD) — The Normal Town Council has banned the sale of kratom within city limits during its Monday night meeting.
This comes after the Bloomington City Council banned kratom a few weeks before. One council member wasn’t aware of kratom before Bloomington voted for the ban.
“I was unaware of this problem at its magnitude until Bloomington took action, and then it came to the forefront as a serious health risk,” said Pamela Reece, city manager.
Town officials said that since kratom is an unregulated substance, it could cause serious health effects to the people who use it. They hope the ban will reduce that risk.
Kratom can still be purchased in cities that have not banned it and used within the Twin Cities. The ban only applies to the sale of kratom.
“I just wanted to emphasize one of my points, which is to center back on what this ban does, which is that it’s not for sale,” said Kevin McCarthy, one of the council members. “If people are using it and are having success and get it elsewhere, that’s not being considered tonight. That’s not something that we’re aimed to address in this particular action tonight.”
Kratom is now banned within the entire Twin Cities and many surrounding cities as well. State regulations on kratom have yet to come through.
