NORMAL – Some local elected officials held a senior citizen resource fair Thursday morning at the senior activity and recreation center in Normal.
The goal, according to U.S. Rep. Darin LaHood (R-Peoria), was to connect with seniors on issues affecting them.
“People may not be getting their social security benefits. Maybe they’re concerned about the health care they’re receiving or not receiving,” said LaHood. “Maybe they have an issue that affects one of their children or a beneficiary.”
LaHood hosted the event along with U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Taylorville) and State. Rep. Dan Brady (R-Bloomington). LaHood said they need to help bridge the gap between seniors and the services offered to them.
“The more that we can get our senior citizens active and engaged in the community, the better it is,” said LaHood. “By no means is this the end of it. We have to continue to engage our seniors in our community to tell them about the opportunities that are out there.”
LaHood added resource fairs like Thursday’s help his office know what services are out there, which helps them better assist seniors who come to his office.
