PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — A Cook County man was sentenced to six months in jail and probation in connection with an accidental shooting at Bradley University dorm last fall that injured a woman.
Edward Traywick Jr., 20, of Lansing, pleaded guilty in February to reckless discharge of a firearm. He was sentenced Friday by Judge Sean Donahue to 30 months of probation and ordered to serve 180 days in the Peoria County Jail.
Without the plea, he could have faced up to three years in prison.
His attorney, Chris McCall of Peoria, said Traywick was very remorseful and apologetic about the incident, which was due to his handling the weapon. The gun, the attorney said, went off by accident and Traywick immediately began to provide first aid, including applying pressure to the wound.
He and others took the victim, who was shot in the abdomen, to the hospital.
Traywick nor the woman who suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen were students at Bradley.
At 2:14 a.m. on Oct. 19, 2025, Bradley University and Peoria police officers were called to a report of a shooting on the third floor of Geisert Hall, according to court records.
Traywick and the victim were both in town visiting a friend at the time of the incident. When the friend went to use the bathroom, she heard a loud noise that sounded like a gunshot, according to court records.
