BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — The head coach of Central Catholic High School‘s Girls Basketball team is retiring after nearly three decades.
Debbie Coffman, also known as “Coach K,” retired on April 29 after 28 years of leading the program and 32 years of coaching, said Athletic Director Nate Thomas.
Thomas said that Coffman told him and her team, “The relationships, memories, lessons, and growth we shared will stay with me forever.”
Among her many accomplishments, Coffman has been named IBCA Coach of the Year multiple times, is one of the Top 15 winningest coaches in IHSA Girls Basketball history and has had zero losing seasons.
“What Coach K has done for the Central Catholic Girls Basketball Program is unfathomable in the current landscape of youth athletics. The top-tier program she has built over her 28 years as our head coach is a testament to her selfless dedication to our school and our student-athletes,” Thomas said.
“Although she is stepping away from the sidelines, I know we will continue to see her in our gym cheering on our Saints for many years to come. Congratulations to Coach K on a well-deserved retirement!”
The athletic director said that the search for a new girls’ basketball coach will begin soon.
