BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — The American Red Cross brought its ‘Sound the Alarm’ campaign to Bloomington, installing free smoke alarms in homes across the city.
State Farm Insurance sponsored the campaign. The goal is to install free 10-year smoke alarms in vulnerable communities across the county.
“It’s important because smoke alarms help save lives. Statistics show that you have about two minutes to escape from a home fire,” said Jayce Eustice, regional communication manager for the American Red Cross. “Smoke alarms are absolutely critical to make sure that people get out of home fires as safely as possible.”
“We want to make sure we kind of remove any sort of barriers that people might have as far as having working smoke alarms.”
The campaign also helps families make an escape plan in case a fire were to happen in their home. Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire by half.
This campaign isn’t the only time you can receive a free fire alarm, as both fire departments in the Twin Cities and the Red Cross will come and install one for you upon request.
“We’re always looking for individuals and homeowners who are in need of smoke alarms. If they’re not part of this program here today, they can always go online to soundthealarm.org, and they can sign up to receive smoke alarms, too,” Eustice said.
Twin Cities residents can reach out to their fire departments and request and install as well.
