MACKINAW, Ill. (WMBD) — The Mackinaw Police Department warned the public on Tuesday that scammers were impersonating law enforcement.
The department said it had received reports of being contacted by scammers via calls or text that claim to be law enforcement, said a Mackinaw police Facebook post.
Those scammers would claim that their victim had missed jury duty or owes fines and will demand immediate payment. The scammer might also spoof their caller ID to appear to be from a police department or government agency.
Mackinaw police warn that they will never demand payment for a warrant or a fine over the phone and will never ask for gift cards or cryptocurrency.
Red flags to look out for include urgent threats if you don’t immediately pay and requests to stay on the line while you withdraw money.
Anyone who receives a call like this should immediately hang up and report it to local police.
