PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — Gas prices continue to rise in the Peoria area, according to a website that monitors gasoline price fluctuations.
According to the GasBuddy website survey of 148 stations in the Peoria area, the average price of gas was $4.22 a gallon, an increase of 8.5 cents from last week.
That’s 9.7 cents higher than a month ago and 92.6 cents higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel rose by 17.8 cents last week, to $5.25 a gallon.
According to GasBuddy, the cheapest place to buy gas in the Peoria area was the Circle K in Pekin at $3.97 a gallon.
The average price of gas in the U.S. increased 10.8 cents to $4.06 a gallon, while the state’s average was $4.23 a gallon, up 10.3 cents from last week.
“Average gasoline and diesel prices rose in nearly every state over the last week, as continued escalations between the U.S. and Iran, renewed Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, and fresh Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries combined to keep upward pressure on both crude and refined product markets,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.
“A weekend pullback in hostilities offered some relief, with oil prices opening sharply lower Sunday, suggesting the pace of increases at the pump may moderate in the days ahead,” he said. “Motorists should expect prices to remain elevated, but the intensity of further gains will depend heavily on how the geopolitical situation develops in the coming week.”
Surrounding areas also saw an increase in gas, with the Quad Cities increasing 2.8 cents from last week to an average of $3.89 a gallon. Champaign saw an average spike of 16.5 cents to 4.23 a gallon.
