Rep. Davis: Dropping support of Trump a ‘family’ decision

WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis, R-Taylorville, said he didn’t talk to Republican Party leaders about his decision to pull his support for Donald Trump’s ‘s campaign for president.

“No, absolutely not,” Davis said. “You know who I consulted? My wife. This was a family decision we made over our kitchen counter.”

Davis is the father of a teenage girl and teen twin boys. He told WJBC’s Scott Laughlin as an advocate to find ways to stop sexual assaults on college campuses, he can’t condone Trump’s sexually aggressive language which was revealed in a 2005 recording.

“I want to continue to do the right thing to reduce sex assault everywhere in this country, especially on our college campuses, where one in five women are assaulted,” Davis said. “That is unacceptable.”

Davis said he doesn’t see his decision to pull his support of Donald Trump’s campaign for president as a vote for Hillary Clinton.

“I am not for Hillary,” Davis said. “Policywise, I think a Republican president would be much better than a Democrat president.”

Davis added the Trump campaign never sought his advice on agriculture issues, even though he was named to Trump’s ag advisory committee.
