NORMAL – Normal’s Town Council has given its approval to the sale of a pair of homes on North School Street which are being flipped from student homes to single family homes.
The home at 513 N. School St. is being bought for $70,000 and the home at 614 N. School St. is being purchased for $45,000. The town had bought the properties for $170,000 and $190,000, respectively.
Councilman Kevin McCarthy said they realize they’re losing money on the properties, but the economic impact the nuisance houses had needs to also be considered.
“It certainly has an economic impact for those in the neighborhood,” said McCarthy. “And not too many years ago, perhaps not on these particular properties but in the area, we’ve had a number of problems with large parties in these neighborhoods that are right around the university.”
Councilman R.C. McBride commended the town staff for bring these projects to them. Mayor Chris Koos added it’s worth taking a loss on the properties in order to make them better fit the space around them.
