SPRINGFIELD – It’s been a tense time at the capitol.
Republicans are still upset at the budget that House Democrats put together and voted on in a rush on Wednesday night.
Speaker of the House Mike Madigan said it was necessary because the Governor’s working groups on the turnaround agenda items weren’t being persuasive enough.
Governor Bruce Rauner says it’s time to get a truly balanced budget and it can be done if lawmakers break rank and vote for reforms. But he remains consistent that parts of the turnaround agenda need to be passed along with a spending plan.
“We’re continuing the process, we’ll never give up, we’ve got to stay persistent,” said Rauner. “Thr working groups have made great progress, I’ve been relatively pleased. I’ve received reports every few hours.”
Lawmakers have until May 31 to pass a budget or any bill without a super majority.
