BLOOMINGTON – Green Top Grocery is ready for the next step as it continues its mission of building a co-op grocery store in Bloomington.
Outreach Manager Katie Novak said they plan to break ground on the building on June 28 at 921 E. Washington St. Novak added they’re still about $200,000 short of their owner loan campaign goal, but she’s confident in the community coming forward to help them hit their goal.
“When people can actually see bricks and mortar, we think the community excitement is just going to grow,” said Novak. “We hope that they’ll be folks that can help us with owner loans and bridge that gap.”
About 1,200 owners are currently involved in Green Top – they hope to reach over 1,800. Novak expected the store to open by spring or summer next year.
In addition to the $1.3 million raised through its owners, Green Top also has $1.5 million in bank loans.
