SPRINGFIELD – Many Illinois officers will be able to better identify drugged drivers.
Illinois is one of four states receiving grant money to pay for special officer classes.
We all know that having a blood alcohol level of .08 equals too drunk to drive. Illinois Impaired Driving Program Coordinator Shannon Alderman said it’s been difficult to identify those drivers impaired by drugs.
“Drugged driving has also been certainly against the law, but its much harder to identify that level,” said Alderman. “In fact, science does not allow us to identify that level for everybody depending on the drug particularly marijuana.”
Alderman says the grant will allow officers across the state to learn techniques in identifying drugged drivers. He says the training will help in the convictions of those arrested under the influence in Illinois.
