CARBONDALE – Southern Illinois University head coach Barry Hinson was named the Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year on Thursday.
Hinson is a 13-year veteran of the MVC, having previously coached nine seasons at Missouri State. He’s in his fourth year at SIU.
Hinson coached the Salukis to a 22-9 (11-7) record and a fifth place conference finish, after being picked to finish ninth. The 22 wins are the most for a SIU squad since the 2007 team, which advanced to the Sweet 16 of the national tournament.
Hinson narrowly beat out Wichita State’s Gregg Marshall for the award, collecting 84 votes to Marshall’s 81.
