BLOOMINGTON – A hall of fame women’s basketball coach who lost her battle with cancer will be honored at Illinois State University during a Monday night benefit.
Redbird Arena will host the benefit for Kay Yow, with all of the events proceeds going to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Spokeswoman Leanna Bordner said the event will include a presentation from a local cancer survivor.
“We’re very thrilled to have Jill Savage, who some may recognize as the leader of Hearts at Home,” Bordner said. “She’s a cancer survivor and she has a great story. Jill does a lot of speaking, but she’s never been asked to speak about her battle with cancer.”
Savage will give her “Battling all odds…how to do it with a smile” presentation during the Monday benefit. Bordner talked about Yow, who lost her battle with cancer in 2009, and the kind of person she was.
“She was very much a woman of faith,” said Bordner. “She had a positive attitude throughout her struggle and her battle. She was the one at the cancer center in Raleigh, North Carolina who was encouraging others in their battle.”
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. More information on the event, which begins at 7 p.m., can be found online at goredbirds.com.
