WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) is seeing red over protests from some Congressional Republicans for President Obama to let the next president to pick the successor to Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.
“Obama was elected for four years. He has 11 months or so left in this term. There’s more than enough time for him to prepare a nominee, submit it to the Senate, go through the orderly process, and take a vote,” said Durbin. “And that’s all he’s asking for.”
Durbin doesn’t subscribe to the thought that Obama is a lame duck when it comes to choosing new members of the Supreme Court.
“And this notion that they’re rejecting the idea that he would want to be president for the remaining 11 months of his term, in my mind, is an indication of just how bad things are in the Republican controlled Congress,” he said
Durbin described Justice Scalia as bright, funny, social and credits him with devoting more than three decades of his life to public service.
