BLOOMINGTON – Students at one local grade school will be greeted with a pep rally when they head back to classes after the new year.
The Promise Council at Oakdale Elementary in Normal is hosting a 100 Caring Adult celebration on Jan. 5 to mark the start of the spring semester.
“This is really a great opportunity to show up at the school and give the kids high-fives as they leave the assembly, and they embark on their second semester and all of the academic challenges or successes that await them,” chairwoman Leanna Bordner said.
Bordner said the people from all walks of life are invited. Illinois State University will be represented by the men’s and women’s basketball teams and by university president Larry Dietz.
Several other schools held similar celebrations when students came back to school after the summer break, but Bordner said this is a time when students could use the added push.
“Right after the holidays they need a little motivation and we are happy to give them a little time to get them motivated for the second semester,” Bordner said.
The council is a network of adults that make five promises – they are caring, they offer safe places, a healthy start, an effective education and opportunities to help others.
The celebration will be held 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Registation for the event can be found here: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0e4caca82ca4fb6-100caring.
