BLOOMINGTON – Miller Park Zoo is turning its poop into loot again. Reindeer gems are back.
Development director for the Miller Park Zoological Society Suzie Ohley said these gems, which are cleaned and painted, have been a zoo holiday hit since 2008.
“We have had people camp out for them in front of the zoo to make sure they get their special ornament each year,” Ohley said. “Each year, we try to come up with a new design so it’s been lots of fun and brought lots of attention to the zoo and some extra funds.”
This year’s gems feature a Christmas tree design. The gems have raised $55,000 for the zoological society since 2008.
Ohley said the gems are a worldwide hit.
“From all (50) states, we have had calls from London and Canada and Guam,” Ohley said. “All over the world, people have been calling to ask for these.”
The gems can be purchased at the zoo gift shop or at www.mpzs.org.
