NORMAL – Vacuum leaf collection for residents in Normal started on Monday.
Leaves should be raked to the back of the curb on the grass, or to the shoulder of the roadway. Keep leaf piles no higher than three feet for safety.Town officials say do not rake the leaves into the gutter or street. The equipment used is a vacuum machine that is designed to collect only leaves. Items other than leaves may cause clogs and possible equipment malfunction.
The crews will follow the same routes as the garbage collection crew; however, they will stay on the route until it is completed. This may take longer than one or two days. High volume, equipment malfunctions and/or bad weather can also put the crews behind schedule. Collection may not be weekly and may not occur on your regular garbage day. For information on which route the leaf crews are currently working on, check www.normal.org for daily updates.
During the seven to eight weeks that the leaf vacuum is running, leaves in bags will not be accepted for landscape waste collection. Other types of landscape waste, such as weeds, flowers or garden plants, should still be placed in open bags or carts at the curb.
If you live in an area where cars are regularly parked in front of your residence, place the leaves at the edge of your driveway or as near to the driveway as possible.
Open burning of leaves is against the law.
Also, to dispose of pumpkins, please treat them as household waste,
