NORMAL – No state budget has meant no funding for MAP grants for college students.
Illinois State University is among the many schools which have allowed students to enroll at the university, and not required them to pay their full bill if they’re depending on money from MAP grants. ISU President Larry Dietz said that practice will continue into the spring semester.
“That’ll start here next week,” said Dietz. “Most institutions are in that kind of time frame; you don’t wait until next semester to register for classes, you do that, typically, about now. And so we’ve already made that decision here.”
Dietz added not every school is in the same financial position as ISU.
“Some institutions would have terrific cash flow problems if they went much beyond about February,” he said.
Dietz explained if MAP funding never comes, students would be responsible for the money owed to ISU. However, he said he “can’t imagine” that happening.
