BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — The return of flights from Bloomington to Chicago by United Airlines has been delayed, the airport announced Friday.
United was first expected to return to the Central Illinois Regional Airport in May with several daily flights to O’Hare International Airport. That was then pushed back to October of this year.
Now, CIRA officials say the airline will not likely have flights here until October 2027 which is when the Federal Aviation Administration will revisit its cap on flights at Chicago’s busiest airport.
“The reason behind the United’s decision to postpone the start of service at BMI is because the Federal Aviation Administration extended its cap on scheduled flights operating from (O’Hare) through October of 2027,” the airport said in a news release. “The FAA first imposed capacity limits at (O’Hare) in May of 2026 in order to relieve peak summer travel congestion.”
Nine other markets are also affected by the decision by the FAA, the airport said.
