BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — The Bloomington Police Department will be joining a statewide campaign to help reduce speeding.
Law enforcement agencies across the state will be teaming up for “Illinois Speed Awareness Day” on July 22, said Bryce Janssen, a Bloomington police spokesman.
On Wednesday, drivers can expect to see more Bloomington police conducting joint traffic stops with the Illinois State Police to reduce speeding and other traffic violations.
“Our ongoing community surveys consistently identify speeding and dangerous driving behavior as the number one safety concern among residents, and we take that feedback seriously,” said Bloomington Police Chief Jamal Simington. “Through focused enforcement and public education, we are working to reduce dangerous driving behaviors, prevent crashes, and make our roadways safer for everyone.”
The goal of the campaign is to raise awareness and save lives. According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, speeding is involved in about 45% of all motor vehicle-related deaths.
