BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — A Bloomington man is in custody after threatening to kidnap and eat an officer, “Hannibal Lector style,” late last week.
Joel Perez, 36, appeared in McLean County Circuit Court after being charged with five counts related to a series of events that occurred on July 8 and 9. He allegedly threatened an officer and also threatened to throw a bomb into the recreation yard at the county jail.
A judge sided with prosecutors and denied Perez pretrial release after finding him to be in an unstable mental state. His past criminal history was also a factor.
Specifically, Perez faces charges of terrorism or making a false threat, making a false report to 911, threatening a public official and misdemeanor assault.
He will next appear in court on Aug. 14 for his arraignment. If convicted of all charges, he faces up to 15 years behind bars.
