BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — The city of Bloomington has received another grant from the Illinois Housing Development Authority to revitalize homes.
This is the second grant the city has received, the first being $500,000 last year. Bloomington was a top performer in terms of spending that grant money on housing and received another $200,000 this year.
“Last year, we were awarded $500,000 from the Illinois Housing Development Authority, or IHDA, for housing rehabilitation. We have good performance so far, so they awarded us an additional $200,000, which will allow us to do an additional three to four homes,” said William Bessler, community development manager for the city.
In total, the city will be able to revitalize 13 to 14 homes in the city. They hope this will show their continued commitment to preserving affordable housing within city limits.
“The funding from the Illinois Housing Development Authority really allows us to make significant health, life, safety, code compliance and accessibility improvements for homeowners,” Bessler said. “It’s an owner-occupier program, and it helps preserve existing affordable housing.”
“The city has a commitment to preserve existing affordable housing, and this is one of the tools that we use to do that.”
Anyone interested in having their home revitalized can go to the City of Bloomington’s website and fill out an application. Homes from the first round of grants have already begun renovations.
