PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — A 45-year-old man has been identified as the person who was found dead in the Illinois River on Tuesday morning.
Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said Damien Gulliford was identified by his tattoos and after being fingerprinted.
The autopsy, which was done late Tuesday, indicated he suffered acute drowning, with no evidence of trauma or foul play, the coroner said.
How and where Gulliford entered the water remains under investigation by the Peoria Police Department, Harwood said.
On Tuesday, Gulliford was found near the Bob Michel Bridge around 9 a.m., Harwood said.
At the time, the coroner said it appeared, based upon the condition of the body and its temperature, that he believed Gulliford had been in the water for less than eight hours.
