EAST PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — East Peoria Mayor John Kahl hoped to reassure residents on Monday that a property the city is about to buy will not be used for a data center or solar project.
During Tuesday’s East Peoria City Council meeting, Ordinance 4915, which will approve the $5.2 million purchase of land between U.S. Route 24 and Centennial Drive for future development, will be up for a vote.
Kahl said residents have raised concerns that the property would be used for a data center or solar project and that the city council shared the concern.
“When city leaders were made aware that the undeveloped Keil & Blye property located between U.S. Route 24 and Centennial Drive was being auctioned off, we had similar concerns and decided to take action,” Kahl said.
The city had successfully bid on three tracts of land at auction, which totaled 272.48 acres for $19,100 per acre.
Kahl said that once the land acquisition is approved by the city council, there will be no consideration of any development involving a data center or commercial solar project.
The property was identified in the East Peoria 2045 Comprehensive Plan as an opportunity for future residential development, Kahl said.
Tuesday’s city council meeting will be held at 6 p.m. and residents will be able to watch on the city’s Facebook page.
