TAZEWELL COUNTY, Ill. (WMBD) — The Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a scammer impersonating the agency.
The scammer will spoof the sheriff’s office’s phone number and claim to be a deputy from the “Warrants and Fines Division,” according to a Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office Facebook post.
Scammers will then claim that their victims missed jury duty, failed to appear in court, or have an outstanding warrant, and they need to pay immediately to avoid arrest.
The post warns that the sheriff’s office has no “Warrants and Fines Division” and will never call to demand immediate payment to avoid arrest.
Anyone who receives a suspicious call from the sheriff’s office demanding money should immediately hang up.
Residents are also reminded to avoid giving out personal information over the phone.
