BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — The city of Bloomington, in collaboration with Normal and McLean County, will host its first-ever drone show, kicking off the 250th celebration of America.
On Thursday, July 2, at the Interstate Center in Bloomington, around 300 different light drones will perform to help kick off the holiday weekend.
“The first drone show in the city of Bloomington’s history is about to take off into the sky on July the second,” said Dan Brady, mayor of Bloomington. “What this is, is a joint venture between the town of Normal and the city of Bloomington, and then the county of McLean, as a major sponsor as well.”
The event is costing around $60,000 to put on, but much of that is being funded by the many sponsors of the event.
“We’ve had major sponsors that we want to say thank you to in our community, from O’Brien Mitsubishi, State Farm, OSF, Illinois Wesleyan University and obviously many, many others, that we’re just very pleased that they were major sponsors for this,” Brady said.
The event will also feature live music from two different performers, one starting at 7 p.m. and the other at 8 p.m. Food and drinks from many different local restaurants will also be available for purchase.
The night is completely family-friendly and will also have many activities for kids to enjoy as well.
“There is a number of family activities. There’s music. There’s food. Just bring your chairs and a keyword here is free. It’s free family entertainment, and it looks to be a great show. I think it’ll be a great opportunity for families to get together, to kick off our 250 celebration,” he said.
Doors open at 6 p.m. on Thursday. No ticket is necessary to attend.
