BRIMFIELD, Ill. (WMBD) — A man found dead Sunday in rural Brimfield is a suspect in a double shooting earlier that day in Springfield.
Scott C. Schattl, 52, was found dead in a vehicle on North Kramm Road, north of Illinois Route 8, in rural Brimfield, according to the Illinois State Police, which is the lead investigating agency on his death.
Troopers and other police agencies discovered the man’s death after a multi-county pursuit. Officers at an unidentified location stopped the car the man was in around 7 p.m. The man fled, and a pursuit began with deputies from the Stark County Sheriff’s Office and the state police.
When they approached the car that was stopped on Kramm Road, officials found Schattl with an “apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.” He was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Springfield police, officers were called to a home in the 3400 block of Peoria Road. When they arrived, officers found adults with gunshot wounds. One, a 33-year-old woman, had life-threatening gunshot wounds to her face and shoulder, police said.
The other, a 42-year-old man, was shot in the arm. Both were taken to St. John’s Hospital for treatment, police said.
Springfield police said he “forcibly entered the residence and discharged a firearm multiple times inside the residence” before fleeing. He was found by state police troopers in Stark County and a multi-county chase ensued.
